How Do You Feel?

The water in the ocean is ubiquitous and steady. The wave crashing the shore is temporary and fluctuating.

A wave rises and then falls. But the wave is nothing more than water.

You may feel sad or depressed. But like the wave, this feeling will rise and then fall. It is not who you are. The next time you are overcome with sadness or fear, find comfort in knowing that you are the water, and not the wave.

Do you write these yourself, or do you get them from somewhere?

I quote it if I copy it from somewhere... although most of the ideas in general come from various Buddhist texts I read....

In this specific case, Thich Nhat Hahn wrote about the rising and falling of a wave to describe the buddhist philosphy on life and death. We do not live or die -- like the wave, we are just the water. I think it also applies to the ups and downs of our emotions. I don't remember his exact words or which book it came from -- I read it a long time ago...
